Very useful tips for starting out with digital photography. With regards shooting with sun behind you, this is not always possible but you can reduce glare with a lens hood. This is a cheat and effective way to reduce glare. Lens hoods only cost a few pounds and are available for most lense, just be careful that you dont get vignetting effect at edges of shot.

I wish to add # 5. Practice makes perfect. Shoot away and do not be tempted to immediately delete seemingly uninteresting images based on what you see on your camera’s LCD. Delete only after you have uploaded and reviewed the images on a computer. Each time you review an image, always ask yourself the question “What can be improved on this shot?” You will notice that over time, the quality of your images will improve naturally. It would not hurt as well to ask for a friend’s opinion from time to time during review if there is such an opportunity.

I agree with Brian – sometimes we don’t have the luxury of setting up the perfect shot.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice quality for the moment.

the great thing is post-production can drastically improve a photo – especially if it’s shot in RAW. I’ve been using Phototools (photoshop plugin) for about a year. I love it.

These are great tips but keep in mind that almost every rule in photography can and should be broken. While early morning and late afternoon light is indeed gorgeous, you get “expected” results.

Photographing with the sun behind you will indeed reduce glare, but if photographing a person it will also cause them to squint. Again, no set rules.. playing is an very important factor when taking the picture.

I will agree that getting it right in camera will reduce a huge a amount of post processing work.
