4 Tips To Help You Enhance Digital Photos
July 23, 2009 by admin
Do you want to learn how to enhance digital photos? Everyone takes pictures these days using a digital camera of some kind. Learning how to enhance those photos will ensure that the pictures that are taken always come out looking the best they can. This article is going to give some tips to help anyone enhance pictures taken.
One: It is important to plan ahead for the picture. In other words, always look through the viewfinder to determine what will be seen in the photograph. Don’t take pictures of someone that has an object in the background that will distract people from the subject of the photo. The background of any picture taken is always important for enhancing pictures.
Two: When pictures are being taken, always watch where the sun is and make sure it is behind you as the picture is taken. This will cut down on any glare showing up in the photograph.
Three: If at all possible, take pictures during optimum light. This is usually in the early morning or in the late afternoons due to less direct light.
Four: Crop any pictures taken to get rid of any distractions that will ruin the picture.
These are the best four tips that will help enhance digital photos, but there are many other tips to be learned also. It is important to remember that you want to take pictures to help capture memories, but it is also important to take really good photographs so they last for many years to come.

To add to step three, I find that for optimal digital photo editing, if it’s cloudy outside it can help you get a great balance in terms of exposure. If you do any post-processing in programs like photoshop or lightroom, you can really push the shadows and highlights with photographs taken on cloudy days. (just keep your camera dry if its raining haha)
Great tips!
I took me a while to learn how to best use the light.
And yes, some basic cropping often produce amazing results and can dramatically enhance a picture.
It’s always better to take the best original picture as possible. Editing can almost always be detected some how or another depending on if it is a scenery or person.

Guilty of failing on all four counts at one time or another.
Thankfully, with practice, and plenty of it, it’s all starting to become second nature.
Good tips.
I have seen some incredibly done black and white digitally enhanced photos that I could not tell what so ever they had been edited in Photoshop. I believe if you have the skills and the gift of working with the software, you can be just as important as the photographer himself. IMHO
These are some good tips.
One thing that you also may consider is using filters.
I learned about stacking filters and it is pretty cool.
You can actually combine an ND filter and a Circular polarizer and have a variable light filter.
This makes a great tool for varying the light on a sunny day, especially if you like slowing the light down for water blur.
Thanks for the tips, glare especially can be a problem.
A tip I learnt when editing photos is always do it in a raw non compressed format, as if your repeatidly editing a photo using a compressed format like jpeg then you will lose picture quality.
Thanks for the tips, i will try that.
great advice thanks. the next level is enhancing photographs for printing. I use color profiles to get the right color prints in photoshop.
Great post. may I add that always go for the highest possible settings so you can have outstanding results when you\’re editing in Photoshop.
Great list, I couldn’t agree more with you. Lighting is the most important factor when taking a shot, I find it best to shoot at mid afternoon. It’s just me though, depends on you’re location.
These are really good tips, I just beginning with photohraphing, but these tips will surely help. And crop, is that cutting of some edges of the photo?

Thanks for the tips. We managed to take some brilliant golden photos one sunny winter late-afternoon at our local beach – I guess that was because the lighting wasn’t too direct.

what tools are you using to do all of that ?
These are great tips but keep in mind that almost every rule in photography can and should be broken. While early morning and late afternoon light is indeed gorgeous, you get “expected” results.
Photographing with the sun behind you will indeed reduce glare, but if photographing a person it will also cause them to squint. Again, no set rules.. playing is an very important factor when taking the picture.
I will agree that getting it right in camera will reduce a huge a amount of post processing work.
I agree with Brian – sometimes we don’t have the luxury of setting up the perfect shot.
Sometimes you have to sacrifice quality for the moment.
the great thing is post-production can drastically improve a photo – especially if it’s shot in RAW. I’ve been using Phototools (photoshop plugin) for about a year. I love it.
I wish to add # 5. Practice makes perfect. Shoot away and do not be tempted to immediately delete seemingly uninteresting images based on what you see on your camera’s LCD. Delete only after you have uploaded and reviewed the images on a computer. Each time you review an image, always ask yourself the question “What can be improved on this shot?” You will notice that over time, the quality of your images will improve naturally. It would not hurt as well to ask for a friend’s opinion from time to time during review if there is such an opportunity.
Very useful tips for starting out with digital photography. With regards shooting with sun behind you, this is not always possible but you can reduce glare with a lens hood. This is a cheat and effective way to reduce glare. Lens hoods only cost a few pounds and are available for most lense, just be careful that you dont get vignetting effect at edges of shot.
